The best advise I can give to receive an "A" or "B" in this class is to attend classes regularly and keep up with the reading. Sometimes geology is like learning a new language because of all of the vocabulary. Not only are the definitions important but how the words can be applied to many ideas is essential. For example, the word basalt is defined as a volcanic igneous rock that is composed of higher percentages of iron and magnesium and lower percentages of silicon and oxygen. Geologists would also understand that the following information is associated with this rock type:  makes-up oceanic crust, the source is from the upper portion of the mantle, shield volcanoes or lava plains are produced and these volcanoes are considered less violent.

Tips for success in this class:

  • Attend class regularly
  • Read or review the chapter before lecture
  • Understand the vocabulary
  • Begin to connect the ideas
  • Ask questions in class or email me after class
  • Answer questions at the end of each chapter
  • Make an appointment to see me if you feel like you are falling behind

My goal is for students to appreciate the science of geology and understand the significance of how geology influences all of our lives.

So, enjoy!
