Exam # 1

The continental drift, plate boundary and volcano worksheets are important guides to questions asked on the exam.  Students are expected to diagram all plate boundaries and  locate an example of each plate boundary on a world map.

Also, the USGS website: http://pubs.usgs.gov/publications/text/dynamic.html  should be helpful with vocabulary and graphics.

The format of the exam will include multiple choice, diagrams, perhaps a world map (to identify plate boundaries) and 2 essay questions.

Exam #1: origin of the Earth, plate boundaries, volcanic rocks, landforms, eruptive styles

 Chapter 1 (Introduction):

  • Topics listed in the table of contents

Questions: 1-10

All figures

Chapter 2 (plate tectonics):

  • Structure of the Earth

  • Definition and explanation of the hypothesis of continental drift

  • Evidence used to support this hypothesis

  • Definition and explanation of seafloor spreading

  • Evidence to support this hypothesis

  • Definition and explanation of the term plate tectonics

  • Evidence used to support this theory

  • The three types of plate boundaries in terms of types of lithosphere involved, direction of plate movement and associated features (Be able to draw a diagram of divergent and convergent plate boundaries)

  • Mechanisms thought to drive the tectonic plates

  • A general understanding of the Earth’s magnetic field in terms of: how iron-rich minerals act as compasses; what did polar wandering explain and how does the pattern produced on the seafloor help support seafloor spreading.

  • Features, age and formation of the oceanic crust.

 Questions: 1-10

Figures help explain above statements

Chapter 6, Volcanoes:

  • How a volcano erupts

  • Why magma melts

  • Classification of lavas and volcanic rocks

  • Simplified Bowen’s Reaction series

  • Volcanic materials: lava, pyroclastic debris (ash to bombs)

  • Temperature, gas content, viscosity

  • Landforms

  • Eruptive styles

  • Caldera formation

 Chapter 7, volcanoes:

  • Understand how lava type can be influenced by the type of setting but variations in lava are common on continental crust

  • Give an example of each tectonic setting (South America and the Nazca plate; Yellowstone; Hawaii, etc.)

  • Name, describe and understand where each volcanic hazard occurs
