How to open a project that was saved on one computer -- on another computer.

  • You will need to download a user extension (.avx file)  for ArcView (a live link appears below).  The extension will need to be saved in the directory whose path is <ESRI\AV_GIS32\ARCVIEW\EXT32> (this is the "extension folder") of any computer you use.
  • In DH210, the <ESRI\AV_GIS32\ARCVIEW\EXT32> folder is located on the D:\ drive.  On your home computer, the <ESRI\AV_GIS32\ARCVIEW\EXT32> is very likely located on the C:\ drive.
  • Click on this link to go directly to the Project Mover Extension download site (ESRI).
  • Be sure to download the file called (ProjectMover.ex-) and not (ProjectMover.apr)! You will need to rename the file (ProjectMover.exe) once it is saved to your Zip disk. Double clicking on its name, within Windows Explorer, will activate a self-extracting utility that will automatically unzip two files: (projectmover.avx), and (projectmover.html) The .avx file will need to be moved to the ArcView Extension folder on any computer you use. The .html file may be opened in Netscape, or MSIE, and contains information about the utility. Read it!

How to import Arc/Info Export files (*.e00) to ArcView From your START menu, click on Programs -> ESRI -> ArcView3.x -> Import71. This will launch the Import 71 utility, which allows ArcView to read Arc/Info export coverages.
When the Import 71 utility dialog opens, type (or browse/navigate to) the name of the Arc/Info Export (.e00) file on the "Export Filename" line. Then type (or browse/navigate to) the folder/filename you would like the new data set saved ("Ouput Data Source"). Do not assign the new file an extension. Click OK. A utility will convert the .e00 file. When you launch ArcView 3.2, with a View window active, you can add these new feature data sets the same as you would for any shape file.

How to import USGS Digital Elevation Models in SDTS format into ArcView

If you download and unzip raster files that have *.ddf extensions, you will need to import these files into ArcView using an SDTS converter.

If the SDTS Converter is already installed on your current workstation...
With a View or Project window active within ArcView, click on File->Extensions. Click on SDTS Grid Import, then click OK. With a View Window active, click File -> Import Data Source. Select USGS SDTS DEM from the pull down menu of the import data source dialog. Navigate to the drive/path/filename of the .ddf file. ArcView will prompt you to assign a name to the grid it creates through this conversion utility.

If the SDTS Conversion Utility is not installed on your current workstation... You will need to download it. Click on this link to go to the ESRI download page. After you download the ZIP file, be sure to read the Readme file (which tells you where to copy the .avx and .dll files).
