| AWG's diverse interests and expertise cover the entire spectrum of geoscience disciplines and career paths, providing unexcelled networking and mentoring opportunities. Our membership is brought together by a common love of earth science and the desire to ensure rewarding opportunities for women in the geosciences. | |
| AWG was founded in San Francisco in 1977 to provide encouragement to women in the geosciences, a career choice where they were largely underrepresented at the time. Today, AWG membership approaches 1200, reflecting the increasing participation of women in the geosciences. AWG is a 501(c)(6) mutual benefit corporation with local chapters in many cities and At-Large members throughout the U.S. and around the world. | |
| The AWG Foundation was established in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation to provide support for AWG educational programs. AWG publishes the bi-monthly newsletter Gaea and AWG E-Mail News to exchange information of interest to geoscientists and working women, including technical and career-development topics and job and meeting announcements. | |
| AWG is organized by a board of directors and by chapters. The Association holds two board meetings and several field trips each year. Numerous opportunities exist for members to become involved in AWG activities at committee, chapter, and Association levels, where they can acquire effective leadership and organizational skills while providing an important service to their profession. In addition to individual membership, AWG also offers membership to corporations, institutions, and professional societies who wish to demonstrate support for our goals. | |
